The first signal of a new pregnancy comes with a missed period. It is during this duration that women develop the urge to urinate more frequently. Other symptoms are extreme fatigue, nausea or vomiting, and increased breast tenderness. Dr Max Mongelli, who is a renowned gynaecologist, explains that it’s always better to perform over-the-counter pregnancy tests which can be done after 9 to 12 days after conception.
The period between conception and egg fertilization
The fertilized conceptus enters the uterus and freely floats in the endometrial cavity for about 90-150 hours, which is roughly 4 to 7 days after conception. The embryo implant occurs typically six days after the conception.
Which is the most accurate pregnancy test?
Dr Max Mongelli explains that the serum HCG test is the most sensitive and specific. The HCG hormone can be detected about 8 to 9 days after the conception and is found in both blood and urine. HCG tests can be performed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The conventional urine tests differ on the parameters of sensitivity specificity. Urine HCG tests are based upon the HCG units set as a threshold for a positive test result. The threshold value is usually 2-5mIU/ml.
The do-it-yourself kits are accurate and widely available. Other urine tests for pregnancy use the agglutination inhibition method. These tests prove negativity more quickly and are generally performed after pregnancy termination.
Calculating the baby’s due date
Healthy pregnancies last from 281 to 282 days. The mathematical calculation which is used to calculate the day and month of the presumed year is known as Naegele rule. A more accurate method used for calculating the ovulatory age involves counting the weeks from presumed ovulation.
When should a woman go for her first prenatal visit?
In ideal cases, women should consult their physician as soon as a pregnancy is suspected. It is recommended to visit a health care provider by the 10th week of pregnancy, to begin with, the prenatal care. Other than that, if you have a confirmed pregnancy, then you should begin with the blood tests, prenatal vitamins and early detection of problems to avoid any last-minute complications.
In case the negative symptoms like unusual bleeding, excessive pain, or unrelenting vomiting appear, consulting a specialist is a must.
Seat-belts and pregnancy
Wearing seat-belts is absolutely fine, but pregnant women should keep their abdomen at least ten inches from the airbags.
